Great piece! And amazingly precocious given that she must have been 16 or 17 at the time. On Earth 2, Julie Burchill never gave up on being a music critic, and is writing thinkpieces about Harry Styles and Billie Eilish for the New Yorker. And the world is a better place for it.
ReplyDeleteapologies with the delay posting your comment, I forgot that I have set it up where I have to approve them! yes a great piece. in the Boy Looks At Johnny she (and Tony P) say that the only truly timeless rock ever made was those first couple of Roxy albums. I didn't know about this NME tribute though until I stumbled on a lone copy of NME as pdf from 1976 at this archive online that has tons of issues from the 1950s and 60s but hardly any after 1971 - https://worldradiohistory.com/Melody_Maker.htm
ReplyDeleteLove The Boy Looked at Johnny - the Tom Robinson / Poly Styrene photo spread is something I still think about often - but had forgotten the Roxy comment. Of course, Tony P is someone for whom it's even more true that he shouldn't have given up the day job!
ReplyDeleteThe other fact that this piece proves about Burchill is that she has (had?) great taste in pop, if not in much else. Viz Poly Styrene being crowned “queen” in TBLAJ. The only time I’ve ever seen Burchill in the flesh was at a Portishead gig. And IIRC she championed Girls Aloud when they fully deserved it.
ReplyDeleteoops Ed, I meant to link the NME part of the archive - https://worldradiohistory.com/New_Music_Express.htm
